The SMU Urban Institute is pleased to share that Professor Andrew Stokols, Assistant Professor of Urban Studies at the SMU College of Integrative Studies and Urban Fellow (Urban Governance) at the SMU Urban Institute, was invited to speak at the Thai Urban Designers Association (TUDA) Panel during the Association of Siamese Architects (ASA) EXPO 2026, held at the IMPACT Exhibition and Convention Centre in Bangkok, Thailand.

Participating in the panel session, Smart Data, Smart Design: From Traffy Fondue to Precision Urbanism, moderated by Dr Santi Phithakkitnukoon, Professor Stokols joined urban practitioners and researchers in exploring how urban data, citizen feedback, and smart governance can contribute to the development of more resilient and people-centred cities.

Drawing on Singapore’s Smart Nation experience, Professor Stokols shared insights into the role of data governance and evidence-based urban planning in translating urban data into actionable design and policy outcomes. His presentation highlighted the importance of integrating data-driven approaches into urban decision-making to enhance the effectiveness, responsiveness, and sustainability of city governance.

The session generated strong engagement among urban professionals, planners, policymakers, and researchers, underscoring the growing regional interest in harnessing data and technology to address complex urban challenges.

Professor Stokols’ participation reflects the SMU Urban Institute’s ongoing commitment to fostering regional dialogue and collaboration on urban governance, resilience, and innovation. It also strengthens the Institute’s engagement within Southeast Asia’s evolving smart city and urban data ecosystem.

We look forward to future collaborations with the Thai Urban Designers Association (TUDA), King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL), and partners across the region to advance research and practice in data-driven urban governance and urban resilience.
