Sustainable Transport: The Role of City Design in Achieving Zero Emissions

To meet the major challenges of the 21st century, cities will not only need to accommodate the growing populations, but also respond to the challenges of ageing and insufficient transport infrastructure, growing inequalities particularly on the urban fringe, increasing air pollution and increasing rates of road injury and non-communicable disease. Building cities that are sustainable, productive and capable of delivering an environment conducive to health and wellbeing is an urgent priority.
This Seminar will highlight opportunities to develop sustainable cities globally. The presentation will outline unique modelling from our research lab that explores city design with respect to transport systems, highlighting important opportunities on a pathway towards achieving zero emissions.
Speaker
Professor Mark Stevenson, University of Melbourne
Professor Mark Stevenson is an epidemiologist and Professor of Urban Transport and Public Health at The University of Melbourne. He is a fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences and an Advisor on injury to the Director General of the WHO. He has worked on numerous national and international projects that have influenced transport policy and worked with both Federal and State Governments in Australia and internationally. Prof Stevenson is the co-director of the Transport, Health and Urban Systems Research Lab in the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at The University of Melbourne.

Professor Winston Chow, Singapore Management University
Winston Chow is a Professor of Urban Climate and Lee Kong Chian Research Fellow based at SMU’s College of Integrative Studies (CIS), as well as the research pillar lead for urban infrastructure at the SMU Urban Institute. He has been a Principal Investigator for the multi-institute Cooling Singapore initative since 2017, and currently leads inter-disciplinary research on how Singapore’s urban climate risks will change as its climate warms, as well as examining measures to reduce these risks. He teaches Undergraduate and Executive Development courses on climate change and urban sustainability at CIS, while mentoring CIS students interested in sustainability issues and also developing courses for SMU's Master of Sustainability programme.
