The seminar will offer an accessible introduction to financial geography as a flourishing new approach to finance that redefines finance as a system of human-environment relationships mediated with money. It will explain what this geographical approach to finance entails for understanding its past, present and future, addressing fundamental questions, including the origins of money and finance, their evolution and variation through time and space, and the opportunities and challenges of financial innovation. It will propose and unpack original concepts, including global financial networks, monetary quality, financial cartography, geo-finance, and planetary finance. Illustrated with visuals from the Atlas of Finance and beyond, it will demonstrate applications of financial geography to Singapore and Southeast Asia.
